| I have received Roelof Newswag's death cert today. He died on 6/8/1897 of cerebral haemorrhage and coma. It says he was 65 but I think this is wrong. They quite often didn't give a correct age. He was a master mariner in the Merchant Service of Cardiff. Roelof Nieuwzwaag born 1827 (tbc) Netherland. Married 1857 Cardiff. Lived in Bridgewater in 1881 and was known as Richard Newswag. He died in Cardiff 1897 as Roelof Newswag. Peter King says: On the historical side, my mother always believed that Richard/Roelof had been from a fairly well-to-do family and that they considered that the woman he wished to marry was somewhat 'below his station'. My mother understood that he (and presumably Louise) eloped from the Netherlands to marry as he was effectively disowned by the family. Romantic if true! Marian Jones advised (24/04/2003): Roelof Nieuwzwaag born 21.7.1827 in the evening in Veendam, father Klaas Sijpkes Nieuwzwaag mother Aaltje Roelofs Kuiper. they were married on 29.1.1827 in Veendam. More from Marian Jones - Summer 2003 When Roelof married Louisa in 1857, he lived at 205 Bute Road, Cardiff and was a master mariner. Antonia lived at 204 Bute Road. By the 1861 census the family had moved to 182 Bute Road, there were 6 lodgers staying with them, and Roelof was a shipping merchant. In 1873, their son Roelof was accidentally drowned in the Glamorganshire Canal. They were living in James Street at the time. Their fifth son, Nicholas was born in Cardiff in 1874. In 1875 the family had moved to Maugham Place, Penarth, but by the end of 1876 they had moved to Bridgewater. Their son, Nicholas, died there in 1876 from Scarlatina. In the 1881 census the family had anglicized their names and were living at 18 Edward Street, Bridgewater. In 1885, Louisa died from choleric diarrhoea, they were living at 49 Hewell St. Cardiff. Roelof died from a cerebral haemorrhage in the Union Workhouse in 1897. During the previous 6 years he suffered from paralysis (presumably from an original stroke) and claimed poor relief from the Union Workhouse for much of that time. When he was not in the workhouse he was living with his son Julien at 10 Llanmaes Street. Their daughter Frederickern was in the Union Workhouse for a month in 1888. |
